Midlands Area Golf

Aiken, Columbia, Florence/Darlington, Greenwood, Rock Hill and Sumter
The gorgeous natural landscape of the state’s interior region is the perfect backdrop for enjoying great golf courses.

Golf in South Carolina’s Midlands can be enjoyed thanks to golf-course architects such as Donald Ross, Arthur Hills, George Cobb, Ron Garl, P.B. Dye, Russell Breeden, Steve Melnyk, Willard Byrd, Ellis Maples, Tom Jackson, Clyde Johnston and Jim Fazio.

The Santee area also happens to be on of the southeast’s up-and-coming golf vacation destinations. The Porter Gibson-designed Santee National Golf Club earned 4 out of 5 stars in Golf Digest’s “Best Places to Play, 2004-2005.” Other fine tests near Santee include the Cobb-designed Santee Cooper Country Club and Jackson’s Wyboo Golf Club. Across the street, at Wyboo Plantation’s private Players Course, an old slave graveyard can be found between the 10th green and 11th tee.

The Breeden-designed Persimmon Hill Golf Club in Saluda is the other Midland’s course to have earned 4 stars in “Best Places to Play.” Other must-play layouts include the 27-hole Traces Golf Club  in Florence; Darlington Country Club and Fox Creek Golf Course, both in Lydia; Timberlake Golf Club in Chapin; Golden Hills Golf and Country Club in Lexington; Paw Paw Country Club in Bamberg; and the award-winning Cedar Creek Golf Course in Aiken.

The LPGA held its Asahi Ryokuken International Championship at the Tom Jackson-designed Mount Vintage Plantation & Golf Club in Edgefield from 2001 through 2004. Hickory Knob State Park Golf Course (which overlooks Lake Thurmond) in McCormick, Parkland Golf Club in Greenwood and Riverchase Golf Course in Union are also among the area’s finest.

Two Jackson designs – Stoney Point Golf Course in Greenwood and the Cheraw State Park Golf Course in Cheraw are outstanding area courses that each earned 4 out of 5 starts in Golf Digest’s “Best Places to Play, 2004-2005.”
