Hilton Head Area Golf

One of the nation’s finest golf getaways is the Hilton Head region, and has been for 45 years. Why? Well, with more than 40 outstanding public golf courses located in Hilton Head area, visiting golfers have plenty of choices at their disposal.  
 
Since the first golf course opened on Hilton Head in 1961, the island has stressed quality over quantity. And courses in the entire region have been designed with a respect for nature.
 
Legendary golf-course architects such as Robert Trent Jones Sr., Pete Dye, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, David Love III, Gary Player and Arthur Hills – among others – have been hired to create works of art. The results are traditional, tree-lined parkland courses with plenty of water hazards, spectacular layouts featuring encroaching wetlands and marshes, and links-style tracks hard by the water.
 
Perhaps the region’s most well-known course is Harbour Town Golf Links (4 out of 5 stars in Golf Digest’s “Best Places to Play, 2004-2005”), jointly designed by Dye and Nicklaus. Site of the PGA Tour’s annual Verizon Heritage tournament , Harbour Town is part of the Sea Pines Resort, which also features Sea Marsh (4 stars) and the Ocean Course. Harbour Town is also 97th on Golf Digest’s “America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses” list.
 
Daufuskie Island Club & Resort’s Bloody Point and Melrose courses also each earned 4 stars.
 
In all, 13 area courses earned 4 stars or better, with two – Fripp Island Golf & Beach Resort’s Ocean Creek Golf Links and Hilton Head National Golf Club’s 27 holes – earning 4.5 stars.
 
Things to Do:
Hilton Head Island is a semi-tropical paradise and lodging is available in all price ranges. Dining in the region ranges from freshly-caught seafood to Southern barbecue to soul food dishes such as red rice and fried okra influenced by West African and African Americans. And there are enough museums and shopping opportunities in the Lowcountry to keep everyone happy.
